PET-CT guided, symptom-based, patient-initiated surveillance versus clinical follow-up in head neck cancer

Summary
PETNECK 2 is a NIHR PgfAR funded Programme to develop a new way to follow-up patients, guided by their symptoms, and compare it to the current way. The new Patient-initiated follow-up method involves low risk head and neck cancer patients having a PET-CT scan 1 year after finishing treatment. If no cancer is detected, they will be educated, by a nurse, about what symptoms of recurrent cancer to look out for. The information will also be given in print and electronically (via a mobile App and website). An ‘open urgent appointment’ guarantees review by their clinical team within 2 weeks if they develop worrying symptoms, instead of regular clinic visits.
We will run a Feasibility study and Randomised Controlled Trial to compare this new Patient-Initiated Follow-up method with standard clinical follow-up to investigate:
1. Which is better at detecting cancer recurrence,
2. What effects these two ways have on patients’ experience, worry about recurrence and quality-of-life,
3. Which costs less, although this is not the main reason for running this study
